Synopsis

Returning to celebrate its 50th anniversary in a dazzling 4K restoration, this atmospheric classic of the Australian New Wave focuses on a group of schoolgirls who mysteriously vanish while on a chaperoned Valentine’s Day picnic. Is it a simple tragedy, or the fatal power of the elemental? Based on the captivating novel by Joan Lindsay, Peter Weir’s gauzy fever dream has influenced culture from Twin Peaks to The Blair Witch Project and The Leftovers —and perhaps most famously, Sofia Coppola’s breakout debut The Virgin Suicides.

The petticoats, ruffles, and intricate embroidery exude a melancholic beauty to construct a delicate portrait of sad girl aesthetics. But through the lens of Russell Boyd’s dreamlike cinematography, these ethereal details take on a deeper, hypnotic allure, capturing the fragile beauty of girlhood. With the eerie sound of Gheorghe Zamfir’s pan flute echoing through the air, the film’s meditation on tragedy, innocence, and loss transforms into something hauntingly feminine, a study of the silent tension between youth and its inevitable unraveling. The central mystery of disappearance lingers just out of reach, as if it is a secret only the girls themselves can fully understand.
