Synopsis

Harry Lee, a 51-year-old part-time security guard and taxi driver, dreams of migrating to Perth—a place he imagines as a peaceful paradise. In his bid to save enough money to relocate, he becomes inadvertently entangled in the underworld of ferrying sex workers to clients. When he develops an unhealthy obsession with a young Vietnamese prostitute who resembles someone from his past, it triggers a dangerous and delusional attempt at personal redemption. His repressed rage and longing spiral into a violent reckoning that will ultimately seal his fate.

Released in 2004, Perth is the second feature film by Singaporean director Djinn. It premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival, was nominated for the New Talent Award at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and won Best Film at the Lyon Asian Film Festival in 2005.

This screening copy was made possible through the digitisation of a surviving 35mm release print preserved by the Asian Film Archive.
