Synopsis

Kassim, a young bachelor who has returned from his studies in England, falls in love with a florist, Rahimah. However, under pressure from his father, he is forced into an arranged marriage with the daughter of his benefactor. After decades apart, Kassim and Rahimah are eventually reunited—only to be separated once again, this time by old age.

Released in 1952, Patah Hati starred a young P. Ramlee in his early 20s, during a formative period of his career. Having already taken on several leading roles, the film cemented his reputation as a multi-talented performer. It also marked the directorial debut of K.M. Basker in Malaya, who would go on to direct a range of titles for both Shaw Brothers’ Malay Film Productions and Cathay-Keris.

The film was restored by the Asian Film Archive in 2015 as part of Singapore’s SG50 Jubilee celebrations, using the only surviving 16mm release print.
