Synopsis

In a state of inconsolation following a car accident that killed his would-be spouse, a feudal lord – reigning over an expansive estate in the countryside—declared war with modernity, in all its rhizomatic incarnations. His descent into madness—at the same time an extreme disgust towards everyday manifestations of an ever-increasing influence of French powers in the country – ran intertwined to the fate of an in-hiding folk musician. As the pair headed towards a seemingly inevitable doom, the world around them reached watershed moments that opened up decades of conflict. The film’s screenplay was adapted from Nguyễn Tuân’s ghostly-tinged short story Chùa Đàn (Đàn Pagoda).
