Synopsis

Oasis, Lee Chang Dong’s third film, is a bittersweet love story between two individuals from marginalised communities. Hong Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu) is looking for the family he accidentally killed in an accident upon his release from prison. Upon meeting the family, he realises they are about to abandon the cerebral palsy-stricken Gong-ju (Moon So-ri, the name ‘Gong-ju’ has the same pronunciation as ‘princess’ in Korean). The film oscillates between meticulously crafted social realism and magic realist moments, illuminating the possibilities of what seems to be an impossible relationship.

Oasis is a psychological drama romance that marks a transitional moment in his career. It is his attempt to “communicate with mainstream audiences” by incorporating elements of commercial romance films with sharp social commentary on ideas of alterity and urban alienation. The film was the 13th highest-grossing Korean film in 2002, with over 500,000 ticket sales in Seoul, besides its critical success in the international film festival circuit.
