Synopsis
The Philippines, 1987: not long after the People Power Revolution that brought about the fall of President Marcos. It is a precarious time for the nation, but eight-year-old Yael, shy to a fault, lives in her own private world. With her mother often at work and her father overseas for the same reason, Yael spends her time writing and listening to cassette-tape letters that her father sends back home. One day, she finds out about a pen that can “translate” the thoughts and feelings of nervous people. Meanwhile, a typhoon approaches. Nervous Translation captures the confusing and magical moments in the life of a child who, though preferring to be by herself, deep down longs to be heard.
