Kyaw Kyaw dreams of seeing punk take off in Myanmar. But for him, as with the genre’s pioneers, “punk” is a deeply political way of being. While some reforms have occurred in Myanmar, Kyaw Kyaw does not believe much has changed in this former military dictatorship. With his band Rebel Riot, they raise awareness of the government’s persistent human rights violations, using concerts and demonstrations to criticise its ongoing persecution of ethnic minorities, while also feeding the homeless through Myanmar’s “Food Not Bombs” chapter. Yet, for Kyaw Kyaw, “punk” is also a religious mission, a unique fusion of Buddhist compassion and anarchistic rebellion. But as he spreads the word to youths on his travels, he is faced with the difficulty of remaining faithful to one’s ideals.
