Synopsis

Muriel’s Wedding follows Muriel Heslop, a socially awkward and ABBA-obsessed young woman stuck in a dead-end life in the fictional town of Porpoise Spit, Australia. Constantly belittled by her overbearing father and dismissed by her so-called friends, Muriel dreams of escaping her mundane existence by getting married—regardless of to whom.  After she reconnects with her bold, free-spirited former classmate Rhonda, Muriel begins to discover who she truly is and what happiness really means. 

A breakthrough hit from Australian director P.J. Hogan, Muriel’s Wedding premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, launching the careers of Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. A defining film of 1990s Australian cinema, it went on to receive multiple award nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Collette. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the NFSA unveiled a 4K restoration of Muriel’s Wedding in 2024, renewing appreciation for one of Australia’s most beloved films.
