Synopsis

“Mountains may depart, but our hearts will remain the same.”

Fenyang, 1999: Tao has two suitors, Zhang and his best friend Liangzi. Tao decides, with a note of regret, to marry Zhang, an aspiring entrepreneur. Flash-forward 15 years, the couple’s son Dollar is paying a visit to his now-estranged mother and everyone has grown more distant in time and space… and then further yet, as the final act is dedicated to an imagined diasporic future set in Australia, 2025.

Jia Zhangke offers his masterful take on the modern Chinese melodrama in Mountains May Depart. Individual and familial ties are explored in the past, present, and future—each innovatively shown in a different aspect ratio. Set to the popular 90’s tune of the Pet Shop Boys’ rendition of Go West, this riveting tale of epic proportions tells the story of loss and nostalgia, both cultural and personal, amidst the unabating passage of time.
