Synopsis

“These are old photos of me and my mother, and I’m not sure if we are meeting or parting.”

Following her mother’s passing, Lana Gogoberidze discovers forgotten films, previously banned and supposedly destroyed. Weaving together personal archives, melding memories of both her and her mother’s past films, Lana’s dreamlike montage of memory, grief, and love retraces her mother’s anguished life as Georgia’s first female filmmaker, their decade-long separation following the Great Terror of 1937 and a lifelong tussle henceforth to reconnect.

Mother and Daughter, or the Night Is Never Complete unfolds a phenomenal tale of Gogoberidze’s seminal filmmaking dynasty, where cinema remains an intergenerational language for passing on history and hope. Lana Gogoberidze traverses decades of inseparable cinematic and national history to seek answers and reclaim her mother’s legacy in this saga that is at once personal yet deeply political.
