Invisible Sleeping Woman, Capsized Boat and Butterfly
Original Title: 보이지 않는 잠자는 여인, 뒤집힌 배 그리고 나비
Director: Young Mee Roh
Runtime: 29 min
Country: Korea
Language: Korean with English subtitles
Rating: PG

Synopsis

“This is a happy-ending fairy tale story like Cinderella, Snow white and etc.

I rewrote this typical story into language of dream (Asian oneiromancy) in order to defamiliarize this typificated cognition. It is about a girl who climbs a mountain, which symbolizes narrative structure such as exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement. After repeating ‘shooting and compositing process’, each scene had been printed to 15,000 framed pictures in different conditions.”

– Text by artist Young Mee Roh

The Red Filter is Withdrawn
Original Title: 레드필터가 철회됩니다
Director: Minjung Kim
Runtime: 12 min
Country: Korea
Language: Korean with English subtitles
Rating: PG

Synopsis

Numerous colonial places, including coastal caves and military bunkers on many oreums (small volcanoes inside a main volcanic crater), as well as memories of uprisings and massacres, are found in every corner of Jeju Island. This work is based on René Magritte’s La Condition Humaine (1935), which offers a view of the outside of a cave superimposed on a canvas. It also includes some quotes from avant-garde filmmaker Hollis Frampton’s performance A Lecture, making it the voice for the entire work.

– Text by Minjung Kim

Island
Director: Ellie Kyungran Heo
Runtime: 29 min
Country: Korea
Language: Korean with English subtitles
Rating: PG

Synopsis

Island features an island located at the southern-most point of South Korea, one small enough that it takes but an hour to traverse its circumference. On the island, there are two extremely contrasting atmospheres, from crowded hordes to hours of emptiness. This contrast emphasises its sense of place as an island, both geographically and psychologically.

Island sheds light on the lives of some of the residents of the island and the questions: ‘where are you now?’, ‘why are you here?’ and ‘what happened to you?’ are put to the subjects of the film, the audience and the director herself.

– Text by Ellie Kyungran Heo
