Funded to shoot a film based on his father’s reputation, young director Wai Bhone faces a deluge of troubles. His producer is breathing down his neck about censorship; his actors would rather be live-streaming; his alcoholic brother-in-law breaks the camera. As his rent keeps rising, his wife and child are losing hope. Money has four legs, and it’s only ever running away from him, and the more he chases after it, the worse his situation becomes.
Marking the centenary of Myanmar cinema in 2020, Maung Sun’s debut feature pays homage to the country’s rich film history, while satirising the systemic issues that plague the industry and nation at present. A timely work that employs humour as a tool of resistance and commentary at a time of political and social repression.
On 5 June 2021, the film’s producer and co-writer Ma Aeint was arrested by authorities in Yangon, where she is being detained as a political prisoner.
