In the vein of a long-forgotten rural tradition known as angkat rumah, a group of villagers band together to completely uproot and move an abandoned house through the forest. This is at the request of respected elder Pak Awang (played by veteran actor Wan Hanafi) who wishes to restore and present it to his daughter as a wedding gift. However, when a Nigerian immigrant on the run from the cops seeks refuge in the house, rumours spread of supernatural hauntings that threaten to undo the village’s communal bonds.
Malaysian New Wave director Liew Seng Tat’s long-awaited second feature after his widely-praised debut Flower in the Pocket (2007), Men Who Save the World employs charm and silliness to satirise the complexities of belief and solidarity within a community.
