Synopsis

Mat, an amateur magician living on Ghost Island, often stumbles during his performances. One day, he encounters a troupe led by renowned American magician and actor John Calvert while at sea. Seizing the opportunity, Mat invites them to perform at the King of Ghost Island’s birthday celebration.

This film is part of the Cathay-Keris Malay Classics catalogue, a collection that is inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Register. The film is unique as the only title that was jointly directed by Mat Sentol and John Calvert. It represents an early creative collaboration between Singapore and Hollywood and was the concluding installment of the Mat series produced by Cathay-Keris.

The restored version of Mat Magic marked a significant milestone, becoming the first Cathay-Keris Malay classic to be screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2021. Additionally, the film has been presented at the Singapore International Film Festival and the Barbican Centre, UK.
