Learn how to play Mahjong and have a practice round before or after watching the Singapore premiere of Edward Yang’s brand new 4K restoration of his penultimate feature film Mahjong. Session 1 will take place at 3pm before the first screening on Sunday, 3 November on 5pm, and Session 2 will take place at 7:30pm after.

About the event

Mahjong is a popular tile-based game commonly played by four players. Each player begins with a hand of 13 tiles and, in turn, players draw and discard (i.e., change) tiles until they complete a legal hand using a 14th tile. Mahjong 101 will be a fun and interactive session where experienced teachers will guide participants through the basics of the game, perfect for beginners! For the first 20 minutes, you’ll learn simple gameplay mechanics and the next hour will include practice rounds with expert tips from our instructors.

About Edward Yang’s Mahjong (1996)

Mahjong is one of Edward Yang’s overlooked films, one of the first in which he has Westerners in key roles, most prominently in the French actress Virginie Ledoyen as the young, headstrong French woman who gets embroiled in the Taipei underworld. The title ‘Mahjong’ is an all-encompassing metaphor for this noirish film, starting with how Marthe falls in with a quartet of four petty criminals: the brains of the operation Red Fish (Tang Tsung-Sheng), wildcard Little Buddha (Wang Qizan), the charismatic Hong Kong (Chang Chen) and newcomer Luren Luen (Lawrence Ko Yu-Lun), the designater driver who also develops a crush on Marthe. Similar to the game, all four members of the quartet bring their own smarts and skills to the gang and their schemes.
