Synopsis
Wide-eyed country girl Ping leaves her hometown in Penang to work at her aunt’s food stall in Kuala Lumpur, forming a sisterly bond with her school-going cousin, Mei. As Mei eagerly awaits letters from a “Mysterious Man”, Ping grows fond of a bad boy of her own. Between midnight joyrides, pasar malam trips, and payphone calls to her long-distance partner, she falls into the shady world of her new lover, John. But when he suddenly goes missing, Ping finds herself slipping – knowingly perhaps – into a pattern of exploitation predetermined by him.
Tan Chui Mui’s debut feature puts an ironic spin on the old cliche of all-conquering romantic love in chronicling a young woman’s journey towards a knowledge of good and evil. Juxtaposing the noise and glow of street eateries against the quiet of the city’s rural outskirts, Love Conquers All captures a stylishly realist portrait of life in Malaysia in the ’00s.
