Synopsis

Christened by the British Film Institute as “the greatest film of all time” in 2022, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles remains a landmark of feminist and avant-garde cinema. Marking its 50th anniversary in 2025, Chantal Akerman’s structured durational cinema meticulously observes the daily rituals of Jeanne, a widowed middle-class housewife and mother, as she moves through the rigid routines of cooking, cleaning, and eventually turning to prostitution to support her son.

Across its patient three-hour runtime, the film transforms the mundane into a slow-burning portrait of domestic oppression, culminating in a quiet but seismic rupture. Made when Akerman was just 24, Jeanne Dielman is a radical meditation on time, labor, and gendered alienation that continues to provoke and inspire, reaffirming its place as one of cinema’s most groundbreaking works where a woman’s gaze is a liberating force.
