Synopsis

Set in the early 1990s, a critical period in Malaysian Indian history, Jagat revolves around the plight of the Indian estate workers in Malaysia who were left in dire straits after the rubber plantations were closed. Told through the experience of 12-year-old Appoy who was trapped in the expectation of his uncompromising father, the rigid education system, and the bad influence of his criminal uncle, the film examines the effects of poverty and the circumstances that force them to make difficult choices out of desperation.

Jagat is the debut feature of Malaysian director Shanjhey Kumar Perumal who won Best Malaysian Film and Best Director at the 28th Malaysia Film Festival in 2016.
