Synopsis
Lying on the cusp of narrative fiction and autobiography is Elia Suleiman’s latest feature, where the director, playing his alter-ego E.S., leaves his native Palestine for Paris and New York to pitch a film. Composed of tragicomic vignettes and visual gags in an idiosyncratic style that has been compared to Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati, Suleiman turns his delightfully absurdist, wryly observational lens towards exploring a global Palestinian’s sense of place in the world, and the pervasive sense of violence in everyday life.
A decade since the director-actor’s last feature, It Must Be Heaven is a much anticipated addition to Suleiman’s inventive and incongruous take on the complex identity of Palestinians that transcends the boundaries of a physical homeland.
