A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery portrays the events surrounding the disappearance of Andrés Bonifacio, the Father of the Philippine Revolution of 1896 against Spain. The film consists of various interconnected narrative threads: the harrowing search for Bonifacio’s missing body by his widow; the story of the ballad Jocelynang Baliwag that became the anthem of the Revolution; the journey of fictional characters Simoun and Isagani found in the revolutionary writings of Jose Rizal; and the agency of mythical creatures such as Tikbalang, Bernardo Carpio and Engkanto from ancient Philippine folklore. The eight-hour film is an epic journey through history, literature and mythology.
Winner of the Alfred Bauer Silver Bear Award at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.
