Synopsis

Stylishly rearranging a Mieko Kawakami short story, this frothy tale features four women whose lives intersect at an ice-cream shop in Shibuya, Tokyo. The debut feature by Tetsuya Chihara, a leading figure in Japanese design and advertising, features a whimsical look at various relationships: romantic, desirous, familial, platonic etc. across the urban jungle that is Tokyo. Natsumi, a part-timer at the ice-cream shop becomes intrigued by a regular customer, Saho (played by Japanese fashion model Serena Motola), yearning for a deeper connection than their everyday ice-cream focused encounters.

Meanwhile, Yu, another regular patron punctuates the humdrum rhythm of her corporate life and familial complexities with the frozen treats as she slowly warms up to Miwa, her estranged sister’s daughter who unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep. The two intertwined tales of fleeting encounters and unexpected tenderness embody the moment of enjoying a fast-melting cone of ice-cream.

With a supporting cast that features Utaha and KOM_I from the musical group Wednesday Campanella, this candy-coloured depiction of Tokyo and the women that inhabit it is styled by Kumiko Iijima, one of Japan’s most in-demand stylists and the costume designer for J-pop sensation Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
