Synopsis

Eighteen locals, including film director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, ex-soldiers and criminals, recall their lives in the fast changing metropolis of Shanghai. Their personal experiences, like eighteen chapters of a novel, tell stories of Shanghai from the 1930s to 2010.

Jia Zhangke constructs cosmopolitan Shanghai in his film through detailed autobiographical- sometimes fictitious- accounts of the migrants and expats, carefully composed location shots, and stylised reenactments of select scenes from Lou Ye’s Suzhou River (2000) and Michelangelo Antonioni’s Chung Kuo – Cina (1972). These intertextual references and everyday scenes draw on and contribute to common and filmic discourse surrounding the various changes elapsed in Shanghai.
