Synopsis

Adapted from Kyoko Okazaki’s 1996 josei manga, Mika Ninagawa’s film of the same name follows the glamorous Lilico (Erika Sawajiri) who underwent a series of surgeries to achieve the epitome of ideal Japanese beauty. Launched into stardom and adored by legions of fans, the surgical procedures prove to be temporary, as strange bruises begin to appear on her body. She spirals downward in her attempts to cope with the loss of her looks and the competition from a new starlet, Kozue (Kiko Mizuhara). Devoured by her narcissism and trapped by society’s commodification of her appearance, Lilico may not appear quite the feminist icon. However, Okazaki’s manga––and Ninagawa’s film adaptation––plays with josei manga tropes, making Lilico a transgressive representation of a Japanese woman, an exploration of the dark feminine who subverts traditional Occidentalist and Orientalist impulses.
