Full Synopsis

After leaving the fast-food burger joint White Castle (the destination of the first Harold & Kumar film), banker Harold (John Cho) and medical student Kumar (Kal Penn) decide to go to Amsterdam, only to be waylaid by a racist homeland security official and packed off to Guantanamo Bay. Though criticized as making light of the actual experiences of detainees, the film’s road trip through the U.S. South turns America’s fraught race relations into comedy gold. Inspired by Up in Smoke, the Harold & Kumar films are a modern buddy stoner classic and a mainstream subversion of aspirational Asian American professional success.

This film is featured in the strand American Trash, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
