Full Synopsis

Lovers who are happy together are all the same. Lovers whose relationship falls apart are all different, unique in the ways they inflict emotional tortures on themselves and each other. Lai Yiu-Fai and Ho Po-Wing were in love when they arrived in Argentina from Hong Kong in search of adventures. One day, Ho walks away from his lover. Lai works as a doorman at a tango bar in Bueno Aires. He is trying to save enough for his air-ticket home. When Ho re-enters his life, bruised and bleeding from a beating, he gives him a bed but refuses to get back into a sexual relationship. Domesticity does not suit Ho, who is soon spending nights out in town. Lai quits his job and starts working in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, where he befriends Chang, a kid from Taiwan. Without realizing it, Lai begins to fall in love with Chang. Meanwhile Ho’s life continues to fall to pieces…

This 4K digital restoration was undertaken from the 35 mm original camera negative by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata and Jet Tone. It was supervised and approved by Wong Kar Wai.

Director’s statement on the restoration

During a fire accident in 2019, we lost some of the original negative of Happy Together. In the ensuing months, we tried to restore the negative as much as we could, but a portion of it had been permanently damaged. We lost not only some of the picture but also the

sound in those reels. As a result, I had to shorten some of Tony Leung’s monologues, but with the amazing work of L’Immagine Ritrovata, we managed to restore most of the scenes to better quality.
