Synopsis
Set in the tumultuous 12th century Heian period of Japan, loyal Samurai Morito thwarts a rebellion against the monarchy and restores order to the throne. As reward for his valiant deeds he asks to wed Kesa, the empress’s lady-in-waiting. When he discovers she is already married, he is consumed with jealousy and desire and embarks on a frenzied quest to win her affection by any means necessary.
Restoration Notes
Sumptuously lensed with exquisite costuming and set design, Gate of Hell was one of the first few Japanese films to utilise the imported Eastmancolor film stock. Although cost-saving, the iconically vibrant visual palette of this film stock proved notoriously challenging to preserve, with film prints rapidly fading over the years. Through recent restoration efforts, the film can now be viewed as close as possible to its original glory.
