Synopsis
The Japanese occupation remains a crucial node of historical trauma, not just in Singapore, but for many across Asia. Amidst the constant tide of rewritten histories, From Island to Island is an unflinching deep dive that immortalises the shared experiences of many Taiwanese, Singaporean and Southeast Asian diaspora, from reminisces of complex daily life under Japanese colonial rule, revisiting pro-Japanese ‘United Asia’ propaganda to confronting unimaginable human rights abuses during World War II.
Alongside rarely seen archive footages, family letters, diaries and reenactments of the bygone era, the film unearths discussions of the elusive and infamous biological and chemical warfare units run by the Japanese military, including Unit 9420, once headquartered in Singapore.
