Synopsis

Celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday before the Iranian New Year, Nowruz, Čahâr-šanbe Suri is a festival of fire and light that is believed to signify health and happiness. The film opens on the morning of the festivities with Rouhi, a soon-to-be-bride who is hired to clean the house of turbulent couple Morteza and Mojdeh. When Mojdeh suspects her husband is cheating on her with their divorced neighbour, she goes to desperate lengths to prove it, even engaging Rouhi to be a spy.

Taking place over a course of a single day, the recurring motif of strained coupledom which appears throughout Asghar Farhadi’s filmography takes centrestage in Fireworks Wednesday. We witness, in parallel, the undoing of one marriage, while another is about to come into being.
