Synopsis
Returning as a 4K restoration more than 50 years after its release, Film About A Woman Who… is widely considered to be choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer’s landmark work. A meditation on ambivalence, Film About A Woman Who… plays with cliches and the conventions of soap opera to tell the story of a woman whose sexual dissatisfaction masks an enormous anger. Juxtaposing still images of blissful couples and idyllic family life with fraught and fragmented interactions between the unnamed characters, Rainer exposes the performative, illusory nature of bliss in romance tropes.
Assembling spoken word, written text, and Rainer’s evocative choreography against the backdrop of Babette Mangolte’s intriguing compositions, Film About A Woman Who… delivers a novel look into the female psyche, making it a seminal work in the field of postmodern feminism.
Adapted from Zeitgeist Films.
