Alternative title: Điện ảnh thứ năm
Directed by: Nguyễn Trinh Thi
Runtime: 56 minutes
Country: Vietnam
Language: Vietnamese with Vietnamese and English subtitles
Rating: M18 – Nudity
“I am a filmmaker, as you know.” In this film, director Nguyễn Trinh Thi unravels the various implications of this statement, for her, as a Vietnamese woman. Moving on multiple cinematic and topical terrains, the film is primarily structured by its accompanying text, a lightly adapted reproduction of Maori filmmaker Barry Barclay’s iconic essay, “Celebrating the Fourth Cinema”, which distinguished Indigenous cinema from the First/Second/Third Cinema framework. Ostensibly introducing a Fifth, Nguyễn leads the viewer through a narrative of indigeneity, colonialism and the limitations of representation, eschewing voice in favor of the written word and juxtaposing footage of her own daughter with archival images of Vietnamese women seen through the lens of “ship’s officers.”
