In 1276, the Mongol forces of the Yuan Dynasty swiftly captured Nanking and continued their advance southward, relentlessly pursuing the retreating Song army. Emperor Chang Shih-chieh of the Song Dynasty turned to the renowned General Chang Ta for leadership in this dire situation. Initially hesitant to engage in the conflict, General Chang Ta’s resolve is bolstered by his persuasive wife and brilliant strategist, Chen Pi-niang. She bids her husband farewell and remains in Haizhou to safeguard the district alongside local militia.

As the months rolled on, Pi-niang receives an urgent call for reinforcements, fully aware that her husband is at the frontlines. Without hesitation, she springs into action, rapidly assembling a rescue mission with the assistance of local villagers and the dedicated fisherman Meng Zhao (Ye Feng) and his wife.

Farewell to A Warrior is a cinematic adaptation of the classic Chinese opera, representing legendary Hong Kong director Chor Yuen’s sole foray into the Teochew opera genre. Despite being of Hakka descent, Ye Feng was chosen to portray the role of Meng Zhao and skillfully delivered the Teochew operatic singing.
