Kang-jae is a low-life gangster who spends his days failing at the most basic of tasks and being looked down upon by his underlings. Instructed by his boss to take the fall for a murder, Kang-jae accepts the deal. Before he can turn himself in, Kang-jae is informed that his legal wife Failan, a Chinese immigrant he has never met, has passed away. He journeys to the seaside village where Failan lived her last days, growing to develop feelings toward her as he reads letters she left for him.

Adapted from the Japanese novel Love Letter by Jirō Asada, Failan is referred to as one of the most emotionally powerful films to come out of New Korean Cinema (late 1990s and 2000s). Director Song’s direction earned him acclaim, alongside Choi Min-sik’s compelling portrayal as Kang-jae, winning the top honours at the 2001 Blue Dragon Film Awards.
