Full Synopsis
Alika Tengan’s Every Day in Kaimukī also plays in the increasingly-popular genre of doc-fiction hybrid films, endowing it with a unique hapa Hawai’ian flair. Co-written with star Naz Kawakami (playing a version of himself), the film imbues Naz’s real-life decision and motivations to move from Hawai’i to New York with a narrative spine that gives him fictional dramatised elements to react to and builds its setting with a cast of Naz’s friends. With a great deal of authentic style, this modern day slacker-tale is a gentle, endearing work from an exciting new filmmaking talent.
This film is featured in the strand A Moment of Aloha, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
