Director: Mani Kaul

Country: India
Runtime: 82 min
Rating: PG

Based on a folktale by Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha, Duvidha tells the story of a newly-wedded bride and her love affair with a shape-shifting ghostly entity, who takes the form of her husband, after her real spouse leaves her for an extended business trip.

Director Mani Kaul’s uses saturated colours, painterly still frames, and multiple, shifting perspectives and voiceovers to craft a luscious, yet minimalistic object of cinema. This is a film that confounds and unveils the viewer at the same time—a profoundly enigmatic and metaphysical work.

The restoration of Duvidha was made possible by the National Film Development Corporation of India and the National Film Archive of India.

Duvidha (The Dilemma) is part of the film programme Parallels: Indian New Cinema (1965-1981). For the full programme, please click here
