Banned in Malaysia for more than a decade, this horror film is based on the gruesome true story of the murder of Malaysian politician Mazlan Idris by Mona Fandey, a pop singer-turnedwitch  doctor. Dukun details the case of Mona’s fictional counterpart, the mysterious and seductive Diana, whose services were sought by a politician seeking immortality through ritual sacrifice. After she is accused of murdering the latter, straightlaced lawyer Karim’s desperate search for his missing daughter leads him to become entangled in Diana’s case as her defender. Combining horror  tropes with a bizarre courtroom drama, the film is a fascinating exploration of greed, corruption and female sexuality that is reflective of contemporary social mores in Malaysia.
