Thus a Noise Speaks (ノイズが言うには) (2010)
Director: Kaori Oda
Runtime: 38 minutes
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese
Rating: R21
Synopsis
Through a series of filmic interventions, Kaori Oda confronts, restages and reframes the process of coming out to their family. Self-reflexively positioned between a family drama and an observational documentary, Thus a Noise Speaks involves characters reliving former realities: Kaori’s sisters reenact a tense dinner conversation; Kaori’s mother reads a moving letter while evading the camera’s piercing gaze; Kaori and an old friend enjoy a light moment over a meal. This quietly confrontational debut film explores the complexities of queerness, family dynamics, and the act of filmmaking itself.

Filmmaker Kaori Oda embarks on a physical and spiritual journey during her time in a foreign land. Weaving personal footage shot between 2013 and 2016, this film connects her experiences as a visitor and filmmaker in Bosnia-Herzegovina with her memories of family, image-making and negotiating identity in Japan. Lying on the cusp between an essay film and autobiography, Toward A Common Tenderness is a delicate meditation on the process of understanding and accepting both self and other.
