The Secret Garden
Year: 2023
Director: Nour Ouayda
Runtime: 20 min
Country: Lebanon
Language: Arabic with English subtitles
Rating: PG

Best Film (International Competition)

Best Movie (Gli Occhi Sulla Città Award, Laceno d’Oro)

The inhabitants of an unnamed city awake to find strange mysterious flora emerging all around them. 16mm footage of Beirut is overlaid with the voices of Camelia and Nahla, who observe and describe in mythical form, this transformation phenomenon taking place around them. As they imbue quotidian images of plants, flowers, buildings and crevices with magic and speculation, they allude to the collective traumas of Beirut’s recent history of devastation and disruptions, from the 2006 Civil War, to the port explosion in 2020 and the present threat of war, in the context of Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

A Night We Held Between
Year: 2024
Director: Noor Abed
Runtime: 30 min
Country: Palestine
Language: No Dialogue
Rating: PG

Centred around a song sung for the Palestinian fighters, A Night We Held Between connects folklore with the present-day socio-political reality in Palestine. Filmed in ancient sites such as caves, underground passages, wild valleys, the landscape is cast as the work’s main protagonist. Rhythmic, ritualistic gestures, and sonic resonations of music and voices, build a vision of collective reclamation—of untold histories and cultures. This is a meditative ode to a land and the spirit of community transcending time and space.
