Saudade (2020)
Director: Russell Morton
Runtime: 20 minutes
Country: Singapore
Language: Kristang
Rating: PG

Synopsis

Remnants of the past linger on: a repertoire of the Jinkli Nona, a traditional courting song performed by Portuguese Eurasians, dissolves into the shadows, a Eurasian fisherman reminisces about the abundant shrimp harvests from time past, and a ghostly phantasmagoria of Malayan folklore floods the screen. Told in the form of a triptych, Saudade breathes life into the mesmerising traditions of the Kristang, the Portuguese creole community in Singapore—one slipping through the flows of urban migration and modernisation.

Synopsis

Married to an old German man through a Cebuano mail-order bride service, Terya is forced to choose between leaving or staying on her island. In a single masterful long take, director Remton Siega Zuasalo strings the audience along on Terya’s arduous journey to the pier where her future awaits. Despite the lofty financial promises to pay her family’s debt, Terya hardly seems excited at the prospect of leaving her culture and kinship ties behind.

The Dream of Eleuteria employs a bold technique that lends an authentic gravitas to the sacrifices that provincial women resort to for survival. In between familial quips and banter, the impending reality of Terya’s departure from home sets in, one step at a time.
