Fresh Kill (1994)
Director: Shu Lea Cheang
Runtime: 80 minutes
Country: UK/USA
Language: English
Rating: R21
Full Synopsis
The sea is filled with radioactive fish and the airwaves are being hijacked by militant environmentalists while two young lesbian parents (Sarita Choudhury and Erin McMurtry) work to nurture their relationships and raise their young child in this newly restored work of “eco-cybernoia” from new media artist and radical filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang. Shot on 35mm and saturated with color, there is a neo-Brechtian quality to the work as it traces networks of corporate power from Taiwan to New York and across the lives of working class people just trying to survive.

Full Synopsis
Meet Andra8, a digital laborer who survives off the data from her various freemium jobs as a virtual assistant, data janitor, life coach, aspiring influencer, and content creator. Andra8’s script is a product of artist Alison Nguyen’s writing and a machine learning program developed with Achim Koh which was trained using data collected from the posts of “B-list” social media influencers (individuals with 10,000 – 1 million followers). The result is an eerie and often nonsensical portrait that compassionately and compellingly captures the many conundrums of digital life.
This film is featured in the strand Super Indie, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
