FLASH (フラッシュ) (2015)
Director: Kaori Oda
Runtime: 25 minutes
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese, English
Rating: PG
Synopsis
On a train from Sarajevo to Zagreb, impressionistic views from a train window are overlaid with intimate conversations between passengers, including personal anecdotes, philosophical meanderings and poetic observations. As filmmaker Kaori Oda gazes out, the conversation ebbs and flows from the outer world into the inner realms, transforming the transitory space of the train carriage into a receptacle for the stories and voices it receives.
Cenote (TS’ONOT / セノーテ) (2019)
SOUTHEAST ASIAN PREMIERE
Director: Kaori Oda
Runtime: 75 minutes
Country: Japan, Mexico
Language: Spanish
Rating: PG13 (Some Mature Content)
Synopsis
Found across the Mexican state of Yucatan, cenotes are natural sinkholes formed in the layers of limestone created by a large comet fall. Serving for centuries as a source of freshwater and acting as burial grounds to the local Maya, they are wellsprings of multiple legends and plural memory.
Shot in Super 8, Kaori Oda dives into these hypnotic underwater caves, bathing the screen with vivid light-leak splinters and abstract underwater imagery. Featuring myths past and present, a lyrical tapestry of the mysterious cenotes are formed, where lived experiences intersect with colonial and pre-historical vignettes, as distant memories echo throughout immersive scenes of light and darkness.
