Full Synopsis
Two interweaving stories take place around Chungking Mansions, a mazelike commercial complex in Hong Kong. One cop, lovesick after being dumped by his girlfriend, falls for a mysterious, blond-wigged, gun-toting femme fatale. A second cop remains oblivious to the attention of a California-dreamy waitress at a fast food counter who resorts to re-arranging his apartment behind his back.
This 4K digital restoration was undertaken from the 35 mm original camera negative by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata and Jet Tone. It was supervised and approved by Wong Kar Wai
Director’s statement on the restoration
“Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love were shot and released theatrically in 1.66:1, one of my favorite aspect ratios, but they were converted to 1.85:1 on videogram. Since most people experienced these films on videogram, it perpetuated the belief that they were shot in 1.85:1. With these restorations, you will be watching them in their original aspect ratio.
Chungking Express was made before 5.1 surround sound, so we had to retool the settings and sound configurations this time.”
