Synopsis

Awang Janggut, a man of noble ancestry, considers manual labor beneath him despite his desperate need for money. After unexpectedly rescuing the Sheikh’s daughter, Siti, and with some persuasion from his wife, Awang Janggut takes on the role of head of security for the Sheikh’s household. However, his growing affection for Siti jeopardises his marriage and sets off a tragic chain of events. 

Chuchu Datok Merah, widely regarded as one of the most significant works in Malay-language cinema, offers deep insights into local folklore and societal dynamics. It was restored by the Asian Film Archive in celebration of Singapore’s 50th anniversary. 

The restoration was made possible with the use of a 35mm and 16mm print from the Asian Film Archive’s Cathay-Keris Malay Classics Collection. Several shots from the 35mm print were unusable due to colliquation (the degeneration of solid film to a liquid state), with the 16mm print filling in the missing sections.
