Full Synopsis

Anthony “Man” Stoner (Tommy Chong) is thrown out of his parents’ house because he refuses to get a job, but hitches a ride with Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin). The misadventures of the two pot-smoking new friends as they procure marijuana and suffer various consequences, such as getting deported to Mexico and making their way back to Los Angeles, provide ample laughs, wacky scenarios, and genuine slapdash charm. The box office success of this first feature film starring counterculture icons and comedy duo Cheech and Chong sparked a long series of sequels and the entire stoner comedy genre.

This film is featured in the strand American Trash, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
