Synopsis
The title Caramel refers to the use of sugaring caramel for hair removal, a tongue-in-cheek observance of womanhood – sweet, yet painful. Nadine Labaki’s love letter to female friendships and the city of Beirut follows four women who run and frequent a beauty salon. Layale grapples to hold on to an affair with a married man; Nisrine contends with conservative traditions as she prepares for marriage; Rima finds herself falling for a woman; and Jamale struggles with her fear of aging. In their sequestered enclave of the salon, where hair gets styled and nails are embellished, their heartbreak, longings and secrets find solace with each other.
Written, directed and starring Labaki, most known for her later neorealist films such as Capernaum (2018), Caramel intentionally presents a vision of Lebanon yet unmarred by political strife, choosing to focus on the quotidian struggles and dreams faced by everyday women.
