Full Synopsis

From a team of Filipinx American documentary filmmakers, this intense look at the murder of Jennifer Laude, a Filipina trans woman, by a U.S. Marine, follows the work of three women connected to the case—an activist, a journalist, and Jennifer’s mother. Call Her Ganda connects the “Justice for Jennifer” movement and protests against the Philippines’ Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), backlash in a society gripped by Catholicism and Duterte’s political conservatism alike, and the project of filling out Jennifer’s life into an intricately connected, galvanizing critique of U.S. imperialism abroad.

This film is featured in the strand A Bold Gaze, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
