Language: Tajik, Russian with English subtitles

Seventeen-year old Farukh lives in a small Tajik town. Dealing in petty crime to make ends meet, he is brother and guardian to mischievous seven-year old Azamat (affectionately called “Pancake”). Raised by their grandmother, since the separation of their parents, the siblings embark on a monumental train ride through steppes, hills, and villages to reunite with their estranged father on the Afghan border—a journey filled with humour, hope and uncanny encounters.

A charming tale lensed in black-and-white, Bratan was the debut film of the late Bakhtyar Khudojnazarov (1965-2015), a luminary of Tajikistan cinema, and among the most celebrated Central Asian filmmakers. His other acclaimed films include Kosh ba kosh (1993) and Luna Papa (1999).

The restoration of the film was initiated and executed by Khudojnazarov’s long-time friend and filmmaker Veit Helmer (Tuvalu, Absurdistan), with contribution from Eye Filmmuseum. The restoration was completed in 2022 and premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
