Synopsis

Love never dies.

Faced with a limited budget, Coppola declared early on that “the costumes will be the set.” For its costume designer, he picked Eiko Ishioka, celebrated Japanese art director and graphic artist whose poster for Apocalypse Now (1979) he had loved. Inspired by Gustav Klimt and twelfth-century Byzantine mosaics, Ishioka’s sumptuous costume designs of metallic, mosaics and lace form a crucial stylistic element of one of the most faithful and carnivalesque adaptations of the titular Dracula.

Released in the 90s at the height of the erotic thriller, this gothic tale brings the bloodthirsty Count (Gary Oldman) out of the shadows and into the forefront, reimagining the character as a tragic war hero, who – in renouncing God after the suicide of his wife, Elisabeta (Winona Ryder) – is condemned to eternal life as a vampire. Years pass, and the shape-shifting Dracula discovers that the reincarnation of his wife, Mina (also Ryder), resides in 19th century London, where he eventually seduces her at the exhibition of a newfangled entertainment: the cinematograph.
