Full Synopsis

Bontoc Eulogy is an archival documentary that collapses time and space in one man’s search for an understanding of his inheritance as a Filipino and as a Filipino-American. In this speculative historical autoethnography Fuentes unearths the tale of Markod, an Igorot man, who participates in the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904 and meets a tragic end. Bontoc Eulogy makes palpable the violence and despair that surround film’s anthropological gaze and challenges us all to question the erasures that history enacts in the name of science and objectivity. Fuentes challenges us to remember the countless Markods that science and history have swallowed.
