SACD Award (Best Screenplay) CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2010
Full Synopsis
The film traces the world surrounding six-year-old Bi, who lives with his family in a dilapidated Hanoi house. The city carries the weight of a complex architectural heritage reflecting multiple historical layers further burdened by paradigms, legacies, and the past. Reticent, languished, in crumbles—Hanoi in the stifling swelter of tropical summer forms a dead-end, a labyrinth in which urban dwellers get lost. Here, private yearnings and sexual impulses cannot circulate, much unlike the summer downpour.
Bi, Don’t Be Afraid is Phan Đăng Di’s debut feature, its international reception upon release instrumental in laying the groundwork for contemporary Vietnamese independent filmmaking, a production mode beyond the exclusivity of state-run and commercial models of the time.
