Synopsis

Mrinal Sen’s frenetically humorous and dizzying film revolves around the misadventures of a cantankerous bureaucrat from the city, who while on a hunting trip to the countryside, encounters a young woman who teaches him the value of empathy and kindness. Widely considered to be the ‘first’ film of Parallel Cinema, Bhuvan Shome is notable for its surreal aesthetic choices, fusing hand-drawn animation, colour reversals and freeze frames, with realistic narrative sequences.

Sen, together with screenwriter and critic Arun Kaul are credited for the use of one of the earliest examples of the term ‘new cinema’. In their influential 1968 ‘Manifesto of the New Cinema Movement’, they write that new cinema “stands for a film ‘with a signature.’… It engages itself in a ruthless search for ‘truth’ as an individual artist sees it… lays stress on the right questions… believes in looking fresh at everything including old values and in probing deeper everything, including the mind and conditions of man.”

Do note that Oldham Theatre operates on a free seating arrangement. Doors will open 20 minutes before showtime so arrive early to choose a seat and avoid disrupting the screenings as AFA does not play ads and screenings will start promptly.
